South Central Community Network

Denver’s Department of Transportation and Infrastructure (DOTI) is committed to achieving a network of better bike facilities in Denver that make it more comfortable, safe, and accessible for people to ride bikes, and to creating a bike network that connects people to the places they want to go. Through 2024, Denver will be focusing on three areas to both understand and prioritize multimodal concerns and implement a system of bikeways. Driver Reaction Time

by Kelly (askkelly.wwpna@gmail.com)

At a time when many of us are walking and biking for our physical and mental health, it is unfortunate that distracted driving is Colorado's leading cause of driver error accidents. Crashes caused by driving while distracted are almost twice as frequent as those caused by driving while intoxicated.

Data shows that although we are driving less during the pandemic, crash rates are not proportionately lower. One key reason is that on relatively congestion-free streets, drivers speed. Another is distracted driving, which seems to be on the rise during the pandemic as health and economic impacts cause stress and anxiety, and sale of alcohol and marijuana increases. Distractions of any kind slow driver reaction time.

Texting while driving is illegal in Colorado. And even if a driver looking away from the road does not cause an accident, messages that are angry or upsetting can easily distract a driver. It is truly alarming how much phone use slows driver reaction time. Distracted driving is avoidable. Putting away our phones while driving is a critical step we can take to improve neighborhood safety and livability for all.
