Byers

We did it !! -- DPS votes 7-Zip to bring DSST to Byers in 2013 !!

Great news! On June 30th the DPS Board unanimously approved Denver’s fifth and final DSST to be located at Byers Jr. High, to be open starting in 2013. You made this happen. Thank you for your steadfast commitment and advocacy. Thank you to our great volunteers and email army. Thank you to our excellent speakers and stalwart meeting attendees. South Denver families and their children owe you all a debt of gratitude.

A debt of gratitude is also owed to the members of the DPS Board. While all seven board members supported DSST-to-Byers, Mary Seawell and Jeannie Kaplan worked particularly long and hard to make this happen. And Bruce Hoyt, who represents much of southeast Denver and was initially non-committal, gave an eloquent speech supporting the decision to place DSST at Byers.

Note: WWPNA has voted to support the effort to bring DSST to the Byers Junior
High School. It is our firm belief that our neighborhood needs school
resources, both now and in the future, to continue to attract families to our
neighborhood.

Dear DSST-to-Byers Supporters:

Thank you for your phenomenal response to our January call to action! Your
emails to the DPS Board made a big impression. Now DPS wants a discussion
directly with you.

DPS has scheduled a “community conversation” about solutions to school
issues in south Denver. This is our opportunity to make sure that bringing
DSST to Byers is part of any solution. Please do three things to help make
this happen:

#1 Fill out the DPS Community Process Pre-Survey. Responses are due by 5pm,
Monday, February 21.

A few helpful tips:

DPS has billed this as a “southeast quadrant” community process. But the
realities of school choice effectively eliminate any artificial
“quadrant” boundaries. We know that DSST at Byers will help families in
Baker, Athmar Park, Ruby Hill, and other nearby neighborhoods. If you live
outside the official “southeast” quadrant, your voice is still every bit
